Annual Bluegrass
Annual bluegrass is a clump-forming winter annual. The blades and stems are smooth and fine in texture. Color is yellow-green. Each plant produces hundreds of tiny white seedheads. Annual bluegrass is a common coastal weed that can be controlled in your lawn by applying preemergence herbicides such as Barricade or Dimension in the Fall (September and November) to prevent the seeds from germinating. At Central Coast Sod we use several methods to control this weed (soil fumigation, preemergence herbicides, post-emergence herbicides, and hand weed control.

Common Bermudagrass
Bermudagrass is a low-growing, wiry perennial that has two types of shoots: those aboveground (stolons) and those below ground (rhizomes). The stolons and rhizomes are capable of rooting in the soil, thus creating new plants as they grow out from the original plant or when they are cut and left on moist soil. Bermudagrass is not an easy weed to control, especially when it must be controlled selectively within an already planted turf, garden, or landscaped area. It can be managed nonchemically with a persistent program of removal, or over large areas with cultivation and withholding water during the summer to desiccate the stolons and rhizomes. Control with herbicides requires careful timing and often more than one application.

Kikuyugrass
Kikuyugrass is a very invasive perennial grass. Mowing low, half-inch encourages kikuyugrass to flower and produce seed. It grows by both rhizomes and stolons.
The best way to culturally control kikuyugrass is to prevent the spread of the grass. Tall mowing shades the surface and will restrict the spreading of the stolons. Care should be taken with any equipment to prevent the physical movement of any vegetative plant parts. To control Kikuyugrass that is starting to invade your cool season turf you may make selective postemergent herbicide applications with Turflon. The Kikuyugrass must be actively growing, and repeat applications may be necessary. Please follow label directions.
